Ed Fella, who has retired from his profession as an illustrator and graphic designer, currently teaches in the graduate program at CalArts, where he has worked since 1987. "After 30 years (from 1957 to 1987), I'm finished with professional practice—the next generation now has it well in hand," he says. "I call myself an 'exit-level' designer. I do my own personal form of 'art-design' which is basically a deconstruction of the forms and techniques of my past work and experiences as that long ago commercial artist, and which seems to bring me lots of recognition (and awards) in my old age. I also love doing projects like this one. It keeps me in the game, but comfortably on the bench."
